Registering to Vote in the Primaries

How the Primaries Work

  • If you are a DEMOCRAT, the 2018 primary races are highly contested. 59 Democrats have registered to run for 10 county and state seats. Other contests will also be on the ballot.

  • If you are a REPUBLICAN, your primary ballot will include all Republican candidates running for county and state offices (currently 6 for 10 seats), as well as other offices.

  • If you are registered as INDEPENDENT/UNAFFILIATED, you cannot vote in the primaries, except for the nonpartisan Board of Education members and judges—unless you change your registration to Democratic or Republican by June 5, 2018 at 9 p.m. Applications to update your registration are available by calling the Maryland Board of Elections (410-269-2840) or online at https://voterservices.elections.maryland.gov/OnlineVoterRegistration/VoterType
