Washington Gas is planning to begin an infrastructure replacement project in the northeast portion of the Town in June of this year.
The project involves replacing the existing gas mains in the street and the service lines to each house. Any gas meters that are located inside a house will be moved outside in accordance with current safety standards. The new gas mains will improve system reliability and increase capacity, as the existing gas infrastructure has reached the end of its functional lifespan. The project is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete, although the contractor will be on each street for a much shorter amount of time.
Although the work will be disruptive, it is necessary given the age of the existing infrastructure. The Town will work with Washington Gas’ contractor to ensure accurate and timely notice to residents of scheduled work, lane closures, service interruptions, and parking restrictions.
The contractor will NOT be starting on Oak Lane as originally scheduled. Instead, the contractor will begin work on Lynn Drive, starting at Oakridge Lane. The work is tentatively scheduled to begin Wednesday.
Streets scheduled for gas main replacement include:
• Aspen Street (between Maple Avenue and Chatham Road),
• Blackthorn Street,
• Chatham Road,
• East-West Highway,
• Leland Street (between Maple Avenue and Meadow Lane),
• Lynn Drive,
• Maple Avenue (between Oak Lane and East-West Highway),
• Meadow Lane (between Aspen Street and East-West Highway),
• Oak Lane, and,
• Woodbine Street (between Oak Lane and Meadow Lane)
