Town Monitors State Housing Legislation

The Town has been actively engaged with the Maryland Municipal League’s Legislative Committee to monitor and propose amendments to Maryland General Assembly bills most pertinent to our residents. One key bill that we are following closely is the Housing Expansion and Affordability Act of 2024 (bit.ly/SB484), spearheaded by Governor Moore and co-sponsored by our State Senator Jeff Waldstreicher.  The corresponding House Bill, HB 538, has been co-sponsored by our State Delegate Jared Solomon. These bills aim to allow multifamily housing in areas zoned exclusively for single-family residences if such housing is within one mile of a rail station and includes at least 25% affordable units (defined as households earning 60% or less of the area median income).

The Town is collaborating with our State Delegation and fellow municipalities to submit amendments that ensure that this bill, if it becomes law, does not compromise municipal authority to determine building codes that would apply equally to all types of residential housing in our communities. The Town has submitted testimony to the House Environment and Transportation Committee, which held its hearing on February 20 and will provide testimony to the Senate Energy, Education, and Environment Committee, which will hold its hearing on March 1. The testimony is available at bit.ly/TOCCTestimony.

Clothing Drive

Winter Clothing Drive Continues Thru February

Did you get a nice warm coat or sweater as a holiday gift? There are people who could use your last year’s clothes. Interfaith Works provides free clothing to thousands of Montgomery County families. Please donate clean, gently used or never used warm coats, gloves, mittens, scarves, hats, sweaters, pants, and socks to those in need. Also needed are waterproof warm winter wear, for those who are outside in the cold rain or snow. The clothing box is located on the front porch of Marjorie Shaw and Barney Rush, at 6917 Maple Avenue (between Maple and Pine Place).

Tom Lake

TOCC Book Club, March 11

Our Town Book Club will read Tom Lake by Ann Patchett for our meeting on March 11 at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall. In COVID isolation, a mother shares with her adult daughters her story of youthful immersion in a theater troupe, revealing many different kinds of love. All Town residents welcome!

Respond by March 31:Climate and Environment Committee Informal Survey on Solar Energy Use

As the Climate and Environment Committee prepares for the upcoming Go Electric EcoFest on April 28 where residents will be provided with a wealth of information on their residential electrification options, the committee has noticed much interest among Town residents in adopting solar energy for their homes.

To support this endeavor, the committee is conducting an informal survey of existing rooftop solar installations and community solar programs. If you have either installed PV panels or tiles on your home or if you are participating in a community solar program, and have not already responded to the request on the Town Neighbors ListServ, please email townoffice@townofchevychase.org by March 31. All information will be kept confidential.
