2024 Town Council Election & Annual Meeting

View the Election 2024 issue of the Forecast newsletter. A summary of the proposed FY25 budget is included in the newsletter.

Council Proposes to Provide Additional Funding for the Bethesda Market Park

At its April 10 meeting, the Town Council endorsed a draft plan to provide additional funding for the Bethesda Market Park. This is an important matter for the Town, and the Council would like to explain to residents the details of the proposal and its conditions. Below is a summary of the proposal. A full presentation of the funding plan, including background and factors that the Council has considered, is available for review at bit.ly/BMPFunding.

-- The Town Council proposes to provide additional funds to the Bethesda Market Park project to maintain the quality and standard for the park that conforms to the initial vision and plans.

-- This additional funding will allow for additional park amenities, including a stage, a playground, and an interactive water feature, which will not be provided within the initial budget.

-- The Council recommends a financing plan that would potentially provide $5 million in additional funding, with contributions from the Town, the State, and other sources, including the Parks Department.

-- If this plan is realized, the Town will provide an additional $3 million in direct funds to the project, which would raise the amount provided directly by the Town to $7.5 million.

-- This proposal includes conditions that will ensure full funding and completion of both parks and meet other Town objectives.

-- The Town has ample reserve funds to address contingencies the Town may face or other special expenditures the Council may choose to make.

Go-Electric EcoFest, April 28

Join the Climate and Environment Committee on Sunday, April 28 from 12 to 3 p.m. in the Town Hall for its first Go-Electric EcoFest, designed to help residents learn about options for electrifying their home to reduce their use of fossil fuel…and about government subsidies to make those changes more affordable. The program will have three elements:

  • Listen to an “electrifying” and informative overview of residential electrification options: solar energy, heat pump HVAC and water heaters, electric clothes dryers, induction cooking, electric vehicles and chargers – plus how to take advantage of subsidies.
  • Learn more about these electrification opportunities at information tables where you can “Ask an Expert.”
  • Visit homes of Town residents to see climate-friendly technologies such as rooftop solar, geothermal energy, heat pumps and more.

*** Enjoy climate-friendly food!
*** Kids’ activities will be available in the Lawton Center during the presentation so parents can actually pay attention!

To find out more, to RSVP for the event (optional but helpful for planners), and to sign up for the home visits, go to bit.ly/TOCCEcoFest or scan the QR code above.

Ministry

TOCC Book Club, April 29

Join us to discuss Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanly Robinson on Monday, April 29 at 7:00 pm in the Town Hall. It is a “cli-fi” story, about how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us, treated with humor and optimism. Chosen by Barack Obama as one of his favorite books of the year. All residents are welcome to this Community Relations Committee event.

Round House Theatre Discussion Group, May 4 & June 23

Theatregoers, mark your calendars and join the conversations! The Community Relations Committee is sponsoring two more discussions of upcoming plays at Round House Theatre, located just north of town on East West Highway. Join us in the Town Hall on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. to discuss A Jumping Off Point and on Sunday, June 23 at 11 a.m. to discuss Topdog/Underdog.

These discussions are scheduled near the end of the runs, so you can see the play(s) whenever you like. Breakfast pastries provided -- bring your own drink. RSVP at bit.ly/RHTMay4 for A Jumping Off Point and at bit.ly/RHTJune23 for Topdog/Underdog.
