Go-Electric EcoFest, April 28

Join the Climate and Environment Committee on Sunday, April 28 from 12 to 3 p.m. in the Town Hall for its first Go-Electric EcoFest, designed to help residents learn about options for electrifying their home to reduce their use of fossil fuel…and about government subsidies to make those changes more affordable. The program will have three elements:

  • Listen to an “electrifying” and informative overview of residential electrification options: solar energy, heat pump HVAC and water heaters, electric clothes dryers, induction cooking, electric vehicles and chargers – plus how to take advantage of subsidies.
  • Learn more about these electrification opportunities at information tables where you can “Ask an Expert.”
  • Visit homes of Town residents to see climate-friendly technologies such as rooftop solar, geothermal energy, heat pumps and more.

*** Enjoy climate-friendly food!
*** Kids’ activities will be available in the Lawton Center during the presentation so parents can actually pay attention!

To find out more, to RSVP for the event (optional but helpful for planners), and to sign up for the home visits, go to bit.ly/TOCCEcoFest or scan the QR code above.

Ministry

TOCC Book Club, April 29

Join us to discuss Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanly Robinson on Monday, April 29 at 7:00 pm in the Town Hall. It is a “cli-fi” story, about how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us, treated with humor and optimism. Chosen by Barack Obama as one of his favorite books of the year. All residents are welcome to this Community Relations Committee event.

Candidates' Forum, May 1

The Elections Board will host a moderated Candidates’ Forum on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 p.m. This event will give residents an opportunity to learn more about the candidates’ positions on the many issues facing the Town. Those who wish to talk with candidates in person may come to the Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. for informal discussion. Residents who wish to attend remotely can join the formal part of the program at 7 p.m. by Zoom. Please submit questions that you would like the candidates to address to townoffice@chevychase.org no later than April 26.

Round House Theatre Discussion Group, May 4 & June 23

Theatregoers, mark your calendars and join the conversations! The Community Relations Committee is sponsoring two more discussions of upcoming plays at Round House Theatre, located just north of town on East West Highway. Join us in the Town Hall on Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. to discuss A Jumping Off Point and on Sunday, June 23 at 11 a.m. to discuss Topdog/Underdog.

These discussions are scheduled near the end of the runs, so you can see the play(s) whenever you like. Breakfast pastries provided -- bring your own drink. RSVP at bit.ly/RHTMay4 for A Jumping Off Point and at bit.ly/RHTJune23 for Topdog/Underdog.

Gin Tasting, May 5

Gin originated as a medicinal liquor made by monks and alchemists across Europe, and as the national drink of England during the so-called Gin Craze of 1695–1735. Who knew? The gin expert from Calvert-Woodley knows -- and will share both wisdom about, and tastes of, various gins. Join the Community Relations Committee for an evening of gin appreciation and light hors d'oeuvres on Sunday, May 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Please RSVP to townoffice@townofchevychase.org as space is limited to 25 participants. Leave the children at home, of course.

Annual Meeting, May 7

On May 7 at 7 p.m., the Town will hold its Annual Meeting both in person in the Town Hall and by Zoom video conference. During this meeting, Mayor Lane will provide an overview of the Town’s accomplishments over the past year, and Treasurer Brancato will present the proposed budget for the 2025 fiscal year, followed by a public hearing and Council adoption. Information on how to join the meeting by Zoom is available here.

Flower

2024 Spring Fest, May 19

The Community Relations Committee and the Town are partnering with the Lawton Center to host the 2024 Spring Fest. The event will take place on May 19 from 12 to 2:30 p.m. at the Lawton Center parking lot. Join us for flowerpot and rock painting, moon bounces, music performance by the BCC Jazz Band, and Clayboy's Shave Ice cart will be there...and so much more!  All ages are welcome, so please join us and bring the whole family for a festive time!

The Garden Club of Chevy Chase's Plastic Recycling Campaign Continues

The Garden Club of Chevy Chase is thankful to all who donated to the plastic bag community recycling challenge during Trash and Treasure weekend. Almost 40 pounds of plastic, most of which is not collected through the Town's single-stream recycling program, were collected. The goal is to reach 1,000 pounds of plastic during 2024. To date, 200 pounds have been donated for recycling. The Garden Club of Chevy Chase wants to spread the word that so much more than store-provided plastic bags can be recycled by the NexTrex Company. NexTrex creates eco-friendly outdoor products from this recycled plastic.

If you are interested in donating to this program, there is a white bin on the front porch of 7617 Lynn Drive, and you can donate all plastic bags through the end of December.  In addition to the items listed below, Town resident Judy Van Namen will collect large bundles of bubble wrap or significant amounts of plastic film you might have received from a delivery.

Must be CLEAN, DRY and STRETCHABLE. If not included on the list, please do not donate.

-- Grocery bags or retail store bags
-- Bread bags
-- Store dispensed fruit/veggie produce bags (with no mesh or holes)
-- Paper towel/toilet paper overwrap
-- Plastic bottle or other beverage container case wrap
-- Pallet wrap
-- Dry cleaning bags
-- Newspaper sleeves
-- Ziploc and other resealable food storage bags
-- Bubble wrap or air pillows
-- Plastic shipping envelopes – no need to remove label (but not shipping envelopes where the outside is all paper)
-- Furniture and electronic wrap
-- Ice bags
-- Wood pellet bags
-- Salt bags
-- Plastic cereal box liners (that stretch; your finger will not pop through)

Questions?  Reach out to Judy Van Namen; (301) 775-1389; 7617 Lynn Drive.
