Bradley Lane Accident and Safety Concerns

The Town Council is aware of, and saddened by, the tragic car accident that occurred last night at the intersection of Bradley Lane and Maple Avenue. We understand that the accident involved high speeds and reckless driving; however, we will not have full details until the County police department completes its investigation. As many residents know, Bradley Lane is a state highway. It falls under the jurisdiction of the state, with traffic operations supported by the County. While the Town can advocate for safety improvements, it does not have direct authority over changes to the roadway.

Over the past several months, the Town Council has been actively discussing ways to improve both pedestrian and vehicular safety along Bradley Lane, and we have made some progress:

-- At the request of residents, the Town supported the deployment of a speed camera on the south side of Bradley Lane. We are currently exploring whether new technology could enable this camera to enforce vehicle speeds in both directions. Regardless, the Town will pursue a speed camera to enforce westbound vehicle speeds.

-- Earlier this month, at the Town's request, the County's transportation department repaired the flashing speed warning system along Bradley Lane.

In response to ongoing safety concerns:

-- The Town Council discussed requesting a barrier between the sidewalk and roadway on Bradley Lane to enhance pedestrian protection; however, the State Highway Administration does not support such barriers, as they can create a false sense of security for pedestrians.

-- We are also exploring the possibility of widening the sidewalk along Bradley Lane to increase the separation between traffic and pedestrians

-- In addition, the Town is researching options to remove or mitigate sidewalk impediments caused by fire hydrants to improve walkability.

As we continue working with State and County agencies to address these issues, we remind all residents to please observe the posted speed limits and exercise caution when walking along Bradley Lane. Community safety is a shared responsibility, and your awareness and vigilance are essential.
