A Message from Irene Lane 
on Her Resignation from the Town Council

After much reflection, my husband and I have decided to relocate to Austin, Texas. It’s an exciting new chapter for us, but leaving this wonderful community makes the decision a truly bittersweet one. As a result, I will be stepping down from my role as Vice Mayor following our Council meeting on November 19. 

Serving our Town has been one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences of my life. I am deeply grateful for the friendships formed, the thoughtful discussions shared, and the collective dedication that makes our community such a special place to call home. Your engagement, kindness, and commitment to civic life have inspired me every step of the way.

Thank you all for the trust, support, and friendship you’ve shown me over the years. It has truly been an honor to serve you.

We cannot thank you enough, Irene, for your dedication to our Town and for your highly effective work as a Council member for nearly 6 years. You have been deeply engaged on many issues, including the redevelopment of Zimmerman Park and the creation of the Scott Fosler path; improving the safety of Town streets and intersections; mitigating  the impact of the Purple Line on Town residents; negotiating the covenants tied to the Corso retirement community; supporting the Bethesda Market Park; securing signalization across East West Highway at Maple Avenue; and developing a constructive response to the County’s plans to permit multi-family housing. On all these matters, you have brought care, thoughtfulness, a commitment to open dialogue with Town residents and fellow Council members -- and a sense of humor. You will be missed by your colleagues and all who have had the pleasure of knowing you. We all wish you well with your new adventure.

As required by our Town Charter, the Council will elect a resident to serve out Irene’s term, which ends in May of next year.
