Winter Storm Warning Issued for Montgomery County

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Montgomery County beginning this afternoon and continuing overnight.

In anticipation of the winter storm, the Town would like to remind residents of our winter preparedness plans.

Street Snow/Ice Removal
The Town’s contractor will treat icy road conditions. Plows operate continuously until the streets are clear.

Parking in Snow or Icy Conditions
In the event or threat of a snowstorm or icy road conditions, residents must park cars either in driveways or on the even-numbered side of the street to ensure safe passage for the snow removal crews. Please do not park cars on the odd-numbered side of the street, unless otherwise posted.

Sidewalk Snow Removal
The current forecast predicts snow accumulation less than six inches.

The Town’s contractor clears snow from public sidewalks only when accumulations reach 6 inches or more. As this threshold is not expected, we strongly urge all residents to promptly clear and treat public sidewalks adjacent to their properties. Acting quickly will help prevent precipitation from freezing and becoming more difficult to remove. Remember, it is the responsibility of residents to clear sidewalks bordering their property within 24 hours of the precipitation ending.

We will monitor the storm and if conditions are worse than expected and the Town mobilizes the sidewalk snow contractor, an update will be  posted on the website and sent out via Town Crier.

While the Town may determine whether to salt and sand public sidewalks in icy conditions, residents play a vital role in ensuring safe and accessible pathways for everyone. Timely snow and ice removal also minimizes the use of ice-melting salt.

Please note that homeowners are always responsible for clearing snow and ice from private walkways and driveways. For assistance, the Town website lists several companies that offer snow removal services.

By taking these steps, residents help maintain safety and accessibility for all. Thank you for doing your part!

Trees
Report downed trees to the police by calling 911 for emergencies or 301-279-8000 for non-emergencies. Town staff and contractors will survey the Town following winter storms. The Town arborist will identify any damage to Town trees and notify either the Town’s tree maintenance contractor or PEPCO (if trees are on power lines) for remediation.
