At its January 11 meeting, the Town Council unanimously approved changes to three Town programs and services in an effort to reduce expenditures for the remainder of the fiscal year. These changes, and associated savings, will help offset an anticipated budget deficit, due primarily to decreased income tax revenue projections. While Council and staff have already achieved substantial reductions in administrative costs during this fiscal year, these additional savings will move the Town closer to a balanced budget.
It is important to note that these changes will only be in effect until the end of the current fiscal year (or June 30, 2017). During discussions of next year’s budget, Council will consider whether to reinstate previous service levels, depending upon future revenue projections.
Sidewalk Snow Removal
The Council agreed to raise the snow accumulation threshold that activates the Town’s sidewalk snow removal program. The Town will now clear public sidewalks when snow has accumulated to 6 inches or more, rather than 3 inches or more. Residents who need assistance clearing snow up to 6 inches, and those who can offer assistance with snow removal, may contact the Town to place their name on a list, which will be made available upon request. We also encourage residents to use the private Town Neighbors listserv to seek or offer assistance with sidewalk snow removal.
Police Coverage
Effective February 1, the Council agreed to reduce police coverage to one 8-hour shift per day, rather than the current two 8-hour shifts per day. The Town will actively monitor reported crime activity, and the Council may decide to reinstate the current police coverage if any increase in such activity occurs over the next five months.
Code Enforcement
The Council agreed to shift some code enforcement responsibilities from the Town's contractor to Town staff, thereby achieving some cost savings without a net loss of enforcement activity.
The Council will continue its discussion of budget reductions at its February 8 meeting and invites residents to attend and comment on these and other possible changes.
