Purple Line Construction Zone - Trespassing and Other Criminal Activity
While the police understand that the Purple Line is still a very contentious and contested issue, we have a responsibility to prevent and investigate unlawful conduct occurring in the construction zone. Recently, there have been a series of criminal acts that are currently under investigation. More importantly, there is a huge safety concern with trespassers on Purple Line property that are endangering their lives when they trespass into a working construction area. The trail is no longer the trail. It is private property and the owner of that private property is entitled to the same rights and afforded the same protections as any other property owner.
The Purple Line Contractors have hired off-duty Montgomery County police officers to help keep the work zones safe for all involved. If you or your family and friends are still trying to use the trail which is officially closed, you will be greeted by these officers and subject to criminal trespass laws. We will continue to use discretion, but until the court reverses the current decision, people need to stay off the trail. Any criminal acts will be investigated and those found responsible will be arrested and charged.
As many of you already know, I do my best with my limited resources to keep my officers in your neighborhoods protecting your family and your homes. However, if criminal acts continue to occur and people continue to trespass, those resources may be diverted to provide additional on-duty patrol to the Purple Line construction areas. Please work with us to keep both your neighborhoods and the Purple Line construction zones safe for everyone.
