County Council Members appropriate money for the County’s capital and operating budgets, set the local property tax rate and other local taxes, approve all land-use plans such as the Bethesda Downtown Sector Plan, act on zoning changes, and appoint members of the County Planning Board and Board of Appeals, among other responsibilities.

District 1 encompasses all of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase area. With term limits in place, this race is now wide open and 9 candidates are vying for County Council Member Roger Berliner’s seat.
