Learn about the Prisons & Justice Initiative and the Georgetown University Student Prison Reform Project -
Professor Marc Howard of Georgetown University has graciously agreed to speak to the town on the criminal justice system & prison reform; he is one of the nation's leading authorities on this issue. As the Director of the Prisons & Justice Initiative at GU, he has taught for years at the maximum-security Jessup Correctional Institution in Jessup, MD.
On top of his normal teaching duties, Howard created a groundbreaking undergraduate course called Prison Reform Project, which in the Spring 2018 semester he co-taught with his childhood friend and exoneree Marty Tankleff. Their students worked to demonstrate the innocence of four likely wrongfully convicted men. On September 20, 2018, Valentino Dixon walked out of prison after 27 years, in part thanks to the new discoveries made by the Georgetown students.
Marc has been featured twice in the Washington Post, those articles can be found https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/09/20/how-golf-digest-helped-free-a-golf-course-artist-imprisoned-27-years-for-a-murder-he-didnt-commit/?utm_term=.aab8b7be05de and https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/in-this-class-prisoners-and-georgetown-students-grapple-with-difficult-lessons/2016/09/07/268644f8-fcfa-11e5-9140-e61d062438bb_story.html?utm_term=.d745ab4b992c .
