Grant Davies’ Candidate for Town Council

Views of a Democrat

As a Democrat who has worked directly with Chris Van Hollen and the O'Malley administration to improve educational opportunities for all, I have come to believe that civility and coalition building is the way you get things done.

I encourage everyone to read my Town Neighbors post from yesterday about civility, community and the election.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/townneighbors/conversations/messages/17275

I have represented the Town for 10 years on the Bethesda Fire Department and have been long associated with the Rescue Squad.  As a Council member I want to ensure that we continue to have the best public service possible, and as a successful leader of enterprises I can get things done:

  1. Identify ways to provide safer streets including additional resident friendly street lights and addressing other hazard conditions.
  2. Establish and revitalize parks for our families and children to have access to improved and safer facilities including Elm Street Park, the Lawton Center grounds, Chevy Chase Elementary School grounds and the 4-H space.
  3. Provide leadership on the Purple Line issues and challenges, including getting results on our safety and mitigation efforts.
  4. Address the Bethesda Sector Plan so that the result of the planning process benefits our Town.

Before I entered the race I often asked, “Why do I want to be a Council member?”

As I have walked the streets of the Town I have tried to answer this question very simply.  “I am running because I want to restore our sense of community and civility.”  Our Town has become partisan.  There are many reasons but in my view one of the prime reasons has been the labels we have put on various people – Pro Purple Line, Oppose Purple Line; Pro Trees, Anti Trees; Pro BIR Hiring Anti BIR Hiring.   I also believe we have started to think the worst of those that might not share our point of view. The result of the partisanship is we are divided as a community, we aren’t civil to each other, we do not engage with those of opposing views, and we look for the worst rather than the best in what each of us brings to any debate.

If elected I promise you I will work every day to bring civility and community back to the Town of Chevy Chase.  No more labels. No more only listening to one side of a debate. No more divisive behavior. Open and transparent dialogue and fiscal responsibility.

It is time to stop the divisiveness and to elect a new Council who believes in coalition building and in trusting your neighbor.  I am asking and thanking you for your vote.  Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a candidate.
