Town Council Candidate – Al Lang

Over my 6 years on the Town Council the most important and enjoyable aspect has been meeting and working with our Town’s residents. To be a good Council member one has to listen and discuss, gather information, have ideas, vet those ideas with as many as possible and understand how to implement those ideas to make our Town an even better place to live.

My career from academia, through government and most recently in the private sector has taught me how to manage projects for success. It has also taught me to be respectful of others at all times, but especially when there is disagreement. If elected I pledge that I will bring these skills to bear to move our Town forward.

Campaigns must be about specifics so that the voters know the agenda and can hold the Council member accountable. My ideas, goals have been refined during this campaign to address the needs of all and in particular the needs of the many new, young families. It has been wonderful to meet so many of the families that live in our Town. These folks – parents and children -- as do all residents want the Council to achieve results.

My specifics are as follows:

Community

Safety first – Improved street lighting: lowered/targeted to the street and sidewalk/non-intrusive LED lights

Green space and facilities for your families’ enjoyment --

Refurbish the Lawton Center play areas – we could do this now

Partnering with MC -- Improve the Chevy Chase Elementary School ball fields and the Elm Street Park facilities – we can do this now

Use the parking lots west of 47th Street to increase parking, by adding 3 tiers underground; to create extensive green space for all by replacing the existing ground level parking spaces; and to establish a safety buffer for our Town – this is truly important to pursue for the future of TOCC

Un-Complicated Lives

Use common sense – Hazardous trees should not be difficult to remove

Get quicker answers from the Town to move on a needed project

Assure transparency

Foster two-way communications at TOCC’s public meetings

I believe in fairness, giving neighbors the benefit of the doubt and will establish give and take communications to inform, to learn and to decide

Eliminate secrecy – It has produced zero; worse it creates divisiveness

Fiscal Responsibility

Decide how to allocate our $9,000,000 reserves. While the months continue to go by – we do not have a plan.  I will work to accelerate this process.

While the clock continues to tick on the plan, the interest rate on the reserves is only .15%. There exist very safe financial instruments yielding far, far, far more than .15%. Move to these safe instruments now.

Fiduciary responsibility – there is a right way to do contracts and there are wrong ways to do contracts. I have extensive contract experience; I understand how to do contracts the right way.

Many have told me that they want action to achieve results to assure an even better Town. I pledge to leverage my experience to achieve results.

I would be very honored to have your vote.

Thank you, Al Lang
