Winter Clothing Drive

November 1 to February 29

Feeling the cold?  So are the men, women, and children who depend on Interfaith Works Clothing Center (IWCC)  to keep them warm.  IWCC provides free clothing to 13,000 income-qualified residents each year, including nearly 6,000 children.  Please donate clean, gently-used or never used warm coats, gloves, mittens, scarves, hats, sweaters, pants, and socks to those in need.  Clothing boxes for your donations are located in the Town Hall (Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and in the Lawton Community Center (Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.).  This drive is coordinated by your Community Relations Committee.

7th Annual Holiday Gift Drive Thank You

Thank you to everyone who generously donated to our 7th Annual Holiday Gift Drive!  The Town was able to donate over $5,000 to the Montgomery County Family Justice Center and Chesapeake Counseling for Children.

Santa Claus and The Chevy Chase Fire Department in Town

The Chevy Chase Fire Department is helping Santa come to Town a little earlier than usual.  The information below indicates the areas that will be visited, but they do not follow any specific street routes.  The visits will start at 6 p.m. and end at 9 p.m.  This schedule is dependent on emergency response calls.
  • December 22 -- Spring Valley Road; Connecticut Avenue to Jones Mill Road; and Jones Bridge to Jones Mill Road to 495.
  • December 23 -- Jones Bridge to East West Highway; Right of Connecticut Avenue to Maple Avenue; and from East West Highway to Bradley Lane.
  • December 24 -- East West Highway to Bradley Lane; Left of Connecticut Avenue to Beach Drive (Behind Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and nearby neighborhoods).

A Reminder about Recycling During the Holiday Season & New Year

Sorting and disposing of household waste appropriately can be confusing.  In addition, China’s recent waste management changes have resulted in a <1% acceptance rate of and dramatic price drops for US recycling materials.  In response, the Town of Chevy Chase’s recycling contractor, Goode Companies, has changed its policies for acceptable recycled materials:
  • Only include authorized items in your recycling (flyer available here)
  • No plastic bags! Instead take them to your local grocery store for recycling
  • Clean all items before recycling
  • Ensure that all paper and cardboard remain dry, otherwise it will be sent to the incinerator
  • Do not include glass in your curbside recycling, instead deposit in container located at the Lawton Center - accessible from 44th Street near the corner of 44th and Elm Street.
  • Sign up for free curbside composting where among other items you can compost food scraps, napkins and pizza boxes (placed under the compost bin)
  • When in doubt, throw it out!
And remember, the best way to minimize waste is to reduce purchases, particularly of single-use plastics such as disposable cups and cutlery, and reuse and even refuse items whenever possible.

Thank you for your attention to this important environmental matter!

Lee Dennison Sustainable Garden -- Phase One Complete

As many residents have noticed, the first phase of the Lee Dennison Sustainable Garden is complete, but there is still work to be done.  The Town has closed the garden for the winter to protect the plantings and make some repairs.  We ask that people and pets stay out of the garden until next spring, when finishing touches should be in place in preparation for a Grand Opening Celebration in April or May.

Off-Leash Dogs and Dog Waste at Chevy Chase Elementary School

The Town office has received numerous complaints about dog waste being left on the grounds of Chevy Chase Elementary School (CCES) and on other public areas in Town. The Town has installed numerous dog waste stations in Town, including three around the elementary school.  Leaving dog waste on school grounds is unlawful and poses a health hazard to children and others who use the school’s outdoor recreational facilities. We appreciate your cooperation in addressing this issue.

The Town has also had calls from residents complaining that dog owners do not observe the County's leash law, including at CCES.  Please remember that your dog should always be on a leash when not in a fenced portion of your yard.  Even generally well-behaved dogs off leash can be threatening to pedestrians and other dogs on leash.  Please observe this law so that everyone can enjoy walks through the Town and their time at CCES.

CCES Safety Concern -- Let's Clear the Air

Students have been finding cigarette butts, cigar butts, and vaping oil containers around the benches in the new track area in the mornings when they arrive at school.  As you are likely aware, Montgomery County school property is a no smoking zone.  CCES is taking a proactive approach to protect our children by posting signs to remind community residents of this law.  As always, your vigilance in this matter is appreciated.
