Dear Neighbors,

Monday night after the Ethics Commission validated Fred Cecere’s candidacy, I congratulated Fred and shook his hand. I respect process and I respect the outcome of this process.

I want to applaud the Election Board and Ethics Commission members for their hard work and deliberations. This was not an easy matter to resolve. I believe all were conscientious in their decision-making.

It is no surprise, I’m sure, that I am disappointed in the stealth campaign. I welcome open and honest dialog and debate of the issues. I expected nothing less from my fellow councilmembers and neighbors. To ensure transparency moving forward, I do hope that the council will address the frustrations expressed by the Ethics Commission and many Town residents and amend the Town laws to require that write-ins submit a letter of intent and their financial disclosure form one week before the election, just as write-in candidates for state and county offices must do. All of us deserve to make an informed decision on our Town government representation. This is the bedrock of a truly democratic election.

Sadly, I believe this campaign has deepened the wounds within the community. In his public statement, Fred said he would try to heal those wounds. I take him at his word and sincerely wish him well in that effort.

For me, the highlight of my service on the council has been the opportunity to meet so many of you through public hearings, Town meetings and special events. On important issues that face this Town, I have worked hard for you and I am proud of the work I have done. That being said, as I have stated numerous times, I could not have succeeded without the benefit of those of you in the community who gave freely of your personal time by volunteering. To you volunteers, I say thank you.

Thank you as well to all the people who have supported me over the years. Please don’t give up on making your voice heard moving forward.
I don’t plan on being a stranger – I hope you won’t be either.
